FACETS Sri Lanka 2013 honours upcoming Gem Cutting and Jewellery Designers

Winners of gem cutting and jewellery design competitions were recognized at FACETS Sri Lanka 2013, the international gem and jewellery exhibition organized by the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA) recently. The objectives of the competitions were to identify and recognize the capabilities of talented jewellery designers and help promote the gem cutting and lapidary industry to be in par with the required export quality.

The gem cutting competition, sponsored by The National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA), was conducted under two categories, Standard and Creative. Under the standard category S. D. Jayasena emerged as the winner, while H.T. Sunil Shantha and Pamudith Asanka Hettiarachchi were adjudged as the first and second runner-up. In the creative category W. Upul Thushantha Perera was declared as the winner while W.H. Priyantha and H.T. Sunil Shantha were the first and second runner-up.

The jewellery designing competition was held for the 3rd consecutive year under the theme “The story of the wind”. Fifty one designers took part and one hundred and forty eight designs were tendered in nine Categories. Chamini Sanjeewa Dasanayake was adjudged as the overall winner while Sujeewa Sampath Dewanarayana and Achini Indika were selected as the first and second runner-up respectively in the Jewellery Design Competition which was organized for the third consecutive year. The jewellery design competition was sponsored by Lalitha Jewellers, A M A Careems, Sifani Jewellers, Colombo Jewellery Stores, Devi Jewellers (Pvt) Ltd. Ravi Jewellers (Pvt) Ltd., Wellawatta Nithyakalyani Jewellers, Unique Jewels and Vogue Jewellers.

Juzar Adamaly, Chairman FACETS Sri Lanka 2013 said, “It is important to realize the increasing importance of world class design trends and needs as we move towards Sri Lanka’s goal of becoming a significant gem and jewellery producer and exporter in the Asian Region. We were overwhelmed by this year’s participation in both these competitions, which no doubt provides a good opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase its creative capabilities and our commitment in producing world class gem and jewellery designs moving forward”.

The elite panel of judges comprised leaders with vast experience in their respective fields including, Ms. Shyamalee Tudawe (Editor, Hi! Magazine), Mr. Chanaka Ellawala (Director, Ellawala Exports), Ms. Hiranthi Pathirana (Senior Lecturer, Department of Integrated Design, University of Moratuwa) and Mr. Ajai Vir Singh (President, Colombo Fashion Week).
