අවංක ලාංකික සිසුවාට ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ පුරවැසිභාවය

මෙල්බන් නුවර හොම්ස්ලන්ඩ් සරසවියේ සිසුවෙකු වු චමිදු අමරසිංහ තම ඉගෙනුම් කටයුතු කරගෙන යෑම සදහා කෙටිකාලින රෑකියාවක් කෙළේය. 2011 වර්ශයේ අගොස්තු මස එක්තරා දිනක ඩොක්ලෑන්ඩ් හි චෑනල් 9 රුපවාහිනි නාලිකා ගොඩනෑගිල්ලේ සේවය කරමින් සිටියදී වෑසිකිළියක් මත තිබි ඔස්ට්‍රෙලියානු ඩොලර් ලක්ෂයක් හමුවිය. එම මුදල්වල හිමිකරුවකු නොසිටි නිසා ඔහු එම මුදල් පොලිසියට බාරදිමට ක්‍රියා කෙළේය. මේ අතර පරිගනක තාක්ෂණය පිළිබඳ වෑඩිදුර අධ්‍යාපනය ලෑබිම සදහා චමිදු අමරසිංහ නවසිලන්තය බලා පිටත්විය.

එම මුදල්වල හිමිකරුවා සොයා ගැනීමට වසර තුනක් යනතුරුත් ඔස්ට්‍රේලියානු පොලිසිය නොහැකි විය. අවසානයේදි පොලිසිය අධිකරණයට දන්වා සිටියේ මුදල්වලට හිමිකම් කියන්නෙකු මේ වනතුරුත් ඉදිරිපත් නොවූ බවයි. ඒ අනුව ඔස්ට්‍රේලියානු අධිකරණ තිරණය කළේ අවංකත්වයට ගරු කිරිමක් වශයෙන් චමිදු අමරසිංහට එම මුදලින් ඩොලර් 81540ක් ලබා දිය යුතු බවයි. ඔහුට ලැබුණු මුදල බර්වින්ඩ් බෞද්ධ විහාරයට පරිත්‍යා කරන බවත්. ඒ තුලින් ආබාධිත අයට උදව් කරන්න බලා පොරොත්තු වන බව චමිදු කියා ඇත.

ශ්‍රි ලාංකික තරුණයාගේ මෙම අවංක ක්‍රියාව ඔස්ට්‍රේලියානු මාධ්‍යයට රස පුවතක් විය.
ඔස්ට්‍රේලියානු මාධ්‍යවේදී ඈන්ගන් තොම්සන් තම පුවත්පතට ලිපියක් ලියමින් කියා ඇත්තේ මෙම තරුණ සිසුවා ගැන හිතා ගන්නත් අමාරුයි. ඉතා අපහසු ආර්ථික මට්ටමක සිට අධ්‍යපනය කරගෙන යන බව ඔහුගේ වාර්තාවේ සඳහන් වේ. මෙම අවංක තරුණයාට ඔස්ට්‍රේලියානු රජය හොද වටිනාකමක් ලබා දුන්නා. ඔහු දෑන් ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ ස්ථිර පදිංචි කරුවෙකි.

A Sri Lankan student who found more than $100,000 while cleaning toilets at Channel Nine’s headquarters has been richly awarded for his honesty.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard Chamindu Amarsinghe, who found hundreds of $50 and $100 notes stuffed into a sanitary bin at the Dockland office in August 2011, will receive $81,597 of the unclaimed cash for his honesty. The remaining $19,500 will go to the state.

Mr Amarsinghe at first thought it was a prank, News Limited reports.

“There was too much to count,” he said.
“But when I touched the notes … I realised it was real money.”

Mr Amarsinghe said he immediately called his supervisor, who alerted the police.

After a plumber pulled out more than $100,000 from the Bourke Street bathroom, police launched an investigation into the origin of the cash, but no one came forward to claim it.

On Tuesday, magistrate Michael Smith said: “There’s no reason why such honesty should go unrewarded.”

Mr Amarsinghe, who now works at a fast-food restaurant and is studying IT in New Zealand, said he was speechless when he received a call telling him the money was his.

“I just want to spend my life in a normal way, find a job in IT and carry out that dream,” he said. (The Age)
