United Cricket Fiesta 2014 organised by the National Youth Front –UK Branch in association with UNP UK Branch was held on 12 July 2014 at Feltham Community College Grounds with the participation of a huge crowd. It was the 5th annual tournament.
The Leader of the Party, Hon Ranil Wickrramasinghe, General Secretary Hon Tissa Attanayake, Chairman of Leadership Council Hon Karu Jayasuriya and Chairman of National Youth Front Hon Ruwan Wijewardane sent special messages to mark the event and admired the efforts made by youth UNPers to promote the party activities in the UK.
There were 20 teams competing for the united cricket trophy and the winners were Leicester Eagles who beat Summer Boys in the final ball of the match. They took away the prize money of £500. The runners up, Summer Boys received £300 in prize money. The event was very well organised and there was a good participation from the young Sri Lankan community. The bouncy castle was a special feature of the event enjoyed by many children. The food stall was very busy and the spectators were queuing up to buy Sri Lanka food and drinks. Hon Tissa Attanayake was the chief guest and UNP MPs Mrs Rosy Senanayake and Mrs Chandrani Bandara also participated.
The MPs admired the efforts made by the UNP UK Branch to promote party matters in the UK while other interested parties try to promote personal goals.
A cricket bat signed by the T20 World Cup winning Sri Lankan team was also auctioned.
Mr Darshan Danial, secretary of the branch made the welcome speech and thanked party leadership and the UNP-UK branch for their continuous support and encouragement to make the event successful. Mr Harshaka Kannangara, President of UNP UK Branch highlighted the main objective of the tournament which was to raise funds for the party headquarters. The young UNPers also used this event to educate the Sri Lankan community in the UK of the need to have a UNP government soon.
